This species, easily recognised by its long straight beak and long legs breeds in the Arctic of Scandinavia and Siberia. Hundreds of thousands of them pass through the UK on their way to their wintering grounds with a number of them stopping off here. On their breeding they are to be found on peatbogs and swamp with areas of raised ground and occasional trees. They are found almost exclusively on shorelines in the winter where they feed on a diet of worms, snails and insects.
