The female has an interesting breeding history. The nest is often concealed and close to water. It is lined with grass and down though she uses less down in the nest than do other ducks. The male desserts when incubation occurs. The young from several females are tended in creches by 1-3 females. The clutch size increases with the age of the female with a clutch size of 14 eventually being reached.
