The male of this species is shown in the photo above. The female is brown and shown below. In the wild it can be found breeding in Alaska and Canada, migrating further south into the US states for the winter. Its natural habitat is ponds and marshes; during migration and in winter it occurs on lakes, rivers, and ponds, and in the southern states on salt water. This bird is commonly known as the 'bluebill' for obvious reasons.
