The species latin name 'sponsa' means bride, and there is no doubting that this duck looks pretty spectacular.
The wood duck's breeding range extends over much of the continental United States and southern Canada, with more northernly breeding birds moving south for the winter. Unfortunatly these birds are regularly shot by hunters every year where they are found on rivers and in swamps.
