Adder skin.
Like most snakes the Adder occasionaly sloughs its skin. This frquently takes place in spring shortly after comming out of hibernation, but at other times too. It is certainly related to the growth of the snake and has been observed (in captivity) to occur at intervals of as little as seven weeks.
