Species from the south African savanna. This is a mongoose that stands just one foot tall. Meerkats hunt with an amazing agility and feed on a diet of bugs, lizards, and small rodents. They are also specialist eaters of the poisonous scorpion. They differ from most mongooses because they live in large social communities of more than one family. Members of these ‘colonies’ have their own task, such as sentry, baby sitter or teacher. Using their sharp claws, they dig huge burrows with tunnel systems for the colony. They all watch out for each other, and are often seen on their hind feet with their noses in the air, keeping watch. Breeding takes place all year round with up to 3 litters being produced by one female.
