A resident bird of the UK it is very common and widespread. It can be found in ponds, lakes, gravel pits, ditches and slow rivers. Its diet consists of leaves and stems of aquatic vegetation,seeds, wild fruits and berries, molluscs, worms and insects. The sexes are alike though the males seem to be bigger.
In March they build a raft of sticks on which to place their nest.

Incubation: 21-22 days
Fledging: 40-50 days
Maximum lifespan: 11 years
Length: 32-35 cm
