Native to Chile, it is fairly common high up in the Andes where it can be found on lakes, lagoons and rivers of the Puna zone. These birds are rarely found in flocks preferring to move around in pairs. Their diet consists of aquatic invertebrates and vegetation. They nest amongst long grass for protection and usually produce 4 eggs.
