Female chaffinches lack the bright colours of the male and can often be mistaken for female house sparrows. Identifying features are that they walk instead of hop like a sparrow, their bodies are leaner and they have a white wing flash (absent in the sparrow)
Sometimes they can also be identified from their call 'pink,pink'
