Not for nothing is this elegant bird of the air nicknamed the 'sea swallow' The tern has a buoyant, graceful flight and frequently hover over water before plunging down for a fish. They are quite noisy birds breeding on shingle beaches, rocky islands and saltmarshes along coasts,islands in gravel pits and rivers. Also on artificial rafts at reservoirs. UK birds spend winter in coastal regions off the coast of West Africa.
Terns arrive in the UK in April and leave August-september.
