The female lacks the black cap of the male and is drabber and much more heavily streaked. The female will build the nest and will incubate the eggs alone, though both birds will feed the young. She can sometimes be mistaken for a Greenfinch but the GF is a much larger bird with no streaking.
Juveniles have browner upperparts and are even more heavily streaked.
