Smaller than a mallard this is a very shy and secretive breeding bird in the UK. A dabbling duck it is to be found on water meadows, flooded grasslands and reedy marshy pools or ditches with plenty of vegetation to hide in. It feeds on a variety of plant material and insects.
In the UK it is to be found in central and eastern England. It is a migratory bird.
