Also known as the Laysan duck it is endemic to Laysan Island, which lies some 225 km off the Hawaiian Islands. It is a small member of the Mallard group but it isnt thought to descend directly from them. In the wild, where it is highly endangered it can be found on brackish ponds & surrounding grassy upland areas where it feeds on a diet of aquatic insects, brine shrimp and seeds. In captivity it is fairly common.
