Also known as the Eurasian crane this bird breeds in northern parts of Europe and western Asia and migrates to Africa in the winter.
In the UK it became extinct in the 17th century but a tiny population now breeds again in the Norfolk Broads. It feeds on a diet of insects, small birds and mammals.
