Breeds and winters in northeastern Asia and Japan. It can be found on freshwater ponds, small lakes, and quiet rivers. Often forages and winters in rice fields or on shallow coastal bays.
During the nesting season 6-10 cream-white eggs are laid in a down-lined grass nest placed in marshy ground near river or wet mountain meadow.
