A fairly solitary shy bird which has a tendancy to remain far out from shore, mingling inconspicuously with other ducks. It has a common status throughout Australia being found in heavily vegetated swamps and floodwaters. Feeding occurs at night on aquatic insects and their larvae. During the breeding season nests are to be found on the ground near water, well hidden in dense vegetation from August to November.
