This frog is the commonest in the UK. Although a decline in recent years from a disease known as red leg and the filling in of farm ponds has conservationists worrying.

It eats all manner of insect and invertebrate life, which it can get into its mouth.

They gather anytime between January and March to spawn in ponds all over the UK.

Garden ponds are very important now for the continued survival of this amphibian.
