Resident birds in the UK though moves down from Scotland in the winter. It depends upon water nearby in which to breed but reeds are not a necessity. In winter, found also in fields and even gardens, feeding with other buntings and finches. Male and female birds are different. The male is shown above. The female is Female is rather sparrow like but with distinctive head markings and streaked breast and flanks. In winter, males head pattern more like females.
Size 15.5cms.
