A small, dumpy, short-legged wading bird.Breeds on beaches around the coast, but has also now started breeding inland in sand and gravel pits. Many UK birds live here all year round, but birds from Europe winter in Britain and birds from Greenland and Canada pass through on migration. It feeds on a diet of flies, spiders, marine worms, crustaceans and molluscs.

Fledging: 25-27 days
Maximum lifespan: 10 years
Length: 14-15cm
