In the wild their range is from southern central America through south America. Their habitat is found in shallow lakes and lagoons bordered by rushes and other aquatic vegetation.
Nests are hidden near the water's edge or built in emergent vegetation. A typical clutch consists of 10 eggs and incubation is 25-26 days. Females make very good mothers and will tend her young diligently.
