Using a billhook takes a bit of getting used too, it looks brutal, but the stem must be split like this so you can lay it down. An expert would have managed that split with one or two cuts :)
Incredibly, the remaining slither of the branch is thick enough for the now hrizontal branch to continue growing, the new growth will be mainly upwards, and so form the new hedge.
Looks a lot better after a bit of a clean up...
The branches are layed down and pinned with wooden stakes we made from offcuts.
