I had never noticed the 'velvet' on the back of a Stagshorn Fern before - this was a particularly splendid example, but my photo doesn't realy do it justice
There is a good collection of Cactii in another of the Glass Houses - but by now we were getting uncomfortably hot and decided to explore the garden - in search of a nice shady tree
Leaving the hot houses we explored the perimiter of the garden to get the size and feel of the place and soon found the Palm House, there are wings on either side of this central domed section but the photo does not show them
Inside the Palm House
The Palm house is has a good selection of Palms, and despite the hard winters many apparently do rather well outside all year round too. The Arch Duke Ferdinand was a keen colector of Palms although it is not clear if any of those he collected have survived here. I found this link about growing Palms in Hungary on the BG Map site.
