There is a fully stocked vegetable garden, complete with scarecrow which displays a large array of vegetables, fruit and flowers for cutting. The vegetables are of a high quality and the whole thing makes you want to go home and dig up your own patch right there and then.
The long borders at Burton Agnes are very impressive. I visited in late July and it was a riot of red from the Crocosmia Lucifer but the gardens are planted for all year round colour and are pleasing at any time of the year. There are also collections of grasses, aquilegias and roses.

Burton Agnes is also home to the National collection of Campanulas. There is a collection garden, where the campanulas all grow together and everything is neatly and clearly labelled. The month of July is the best time to see this at its best. The campanulas can also be seen growing throughout the gardens amongst the other plants.

There are a huge range of Campanulas for the garden from the very tall Lactifloras to the tiny white clips campanulas. As with other plants there are also alpine varieties as well as varieties suited to the herbaceous border. The campanula in the photo is C. Punctata ‘Pantaloons’ It grows to about 15 inches high and has large dropping pink/mauve coloured flowers.
