This amazing Tree Fern, only grows in Northland, at the top Northern portion of NZ. The rest of the country gets too cold for it.
Its most dramatic feature is its striking black 'trunk' and the huge umbrella canopy. Each frond can grow to 6 metres (20 feet) in length.
It is the largest tree fern in NZ, and possibly the world?? In forest areas it grows to 20 metres (65 feet) tall. Thats a giant even for forest hardwood trees.
