This is a bracket fungus (also known as Shelf or Polypore fungus)These fungi are most often found on logs, stumps or other decaying wood. They are typically tough and woody and produce their spores on the tubes of the undersurface

This particular fungus grades to yellow where it attaches to the woods and is usually found on hardwoods.
