Hi

I found Alan's design on the web and was thinking that I would like to build a polytunnel but have it 14ft wide x 20ft long.

I was wondering how long each pipe section would need to be to span that distance. In the original article Alan says 19ft each for a 10ft wide tunnel.

Thanks Robin

It depends on the height of the fixing poles in the ground and the height of the tunnel.

If you assume the upper portion of the tunnel is a semicircle then the length of the circumference is 1/2 Pi x D so 22ft Plus twice the height of on of the ground securing poles.

Thanks Clive

I don't have any pipes yet. I was thinking of 6ft poles and knocking them 2ft in to the ground. So 4ft out of the ground.

Is that any help?
Thanks Robin

I hadn't noticed that Alan's tubes didn't go all the way to the ground.
Alan has the tubing extend over the pipes for 12" each side.

So -

14 feet X Pi = 44, divide by 2 = 22.
22 + 2 = 24 feet

Hi again Clive.

If I go for the 14ft wide x 20ft long how do I calc how high the tunnel will be to the top of the MDPE?

I think that I will go down 2ft on the pipes & using your calc above I see that I would need 2ft extra on each length making each MDPE pipe 26ft.

I am just looking to see how much it will cost for a cover.

Thanks Robin
