Tulips are the last Spring bulbs to flower, particularly the varieties which flower in late April to May, like the spectacular Parrot tulips. Two other late flowering ones are Angelique, which is the colour of apple blossom and Black Knight, which is a good contrast to Angelique's delicacy. A problem with these late flowering varieties is that their foliage is dying down when gardeners want to plant out their summer bedding. One way of getting around this is to plant them in long, deep window boxes in which they can be left to lie down in a sunny spot, which helps to reinvigorate the bulbs. In the Autumn the soil can be replenished and fertilised and every couple of years the bulblets, which will have grown on the original bulbs, can be broken off so that they don't weaken the next year's growth.
