Hello zita, welcome to OGG.

Newts live on land as well as in water, they mainly go to water i.e. a pond to breed and some overwinter in ponds. I would place the newt either near some thickish foliage or make a little mound of stones so that it can hide inside, it will find it's own way to water when the time is right. The newts in my garden seem to be mostly active at night.
