I've just seen a large yellow butterfly, too large for a brimstone. Any ideas?

hi madge, you could have seen a clouded yellow, or maybe a green hairsteak. or even a large white the sun may have caught it wrong and gave you the impression it was yellow. but the first butterfly we see here is the brimstone you do have freaks of nature where some grow bigger than orthers

My guess would be a brimstone Madge, I know they come out early in the year. I don't think it would be a green hairstreak as Paul suggested as the ones I have seen have been smaller than a brimstone and I believe appear a bit later in the year. So far the only butterflies I have seen have been a very tatty peacock, a couple of red admirals and a couple of commas, the comma that was over wintering in our shed went on a warm day last week.

I looked it up and think it was probably a brimstone. I hope it survives - Lucy is rather too fond of butterflies and they are very vulnerable when they first come outemoticon
