| It never ceases to amaze me just how tough some of our garden plants are. Today I went out to inspect some clematis I bought in October last year. They are still in their 2 litre pots and have been covered in almost a foot of snow and frozen solid for weeks but I was delighted to see new growth coming on all of them. What real tough plants they are! I am hoping for a real good show in my garden this summer Also my tulips and summer fritilleries are sprouting a good inch above the compost. It seems so early but they seem adamant that they want to see the world already!  What is showing in your garden already? |

| You mean besides frozen plant tips, and nibbled bark? Not much here yet, Psilo, and probably won't see anybody sprouting like at your place for another 2 months. Such is life in zone 5, Northeastern Pennsylvania. Lisa | |

| Our climate here Lisa is so very strange. For quite some time it was colder than even in Russia. Tonight it is very cold, minus 3 with snow today but still some plants are showing some signs of life already.Our spring always seems to start very early. The hyacinth and narcissi bulbs that I planted in October and put on my very cold toilet windowsill (they get no heating at all) are now flowering giving wonderful scent and colour. |

| 4 months without rain is that normal? How do you manage to grow anything? Keeping things watered must be a real pain, I complain when we are without rain for 4 weeks and have to water the pot plants most days. | |

| I am always surprised to see the little violas in my containers perk up after heavy frost or snow, showing their cheerful little faces to the world. Pansies too perk up but violas, I find, are quicker to recover. One of the advantages of snow (which may have helped your clematis psilo) is that, when it slowly thaws, it provides a huge amount of water, especially in the nooks and crannies where hoses and even rain often hardly touch. And of course it kills the aphids which damage so many plants. |

| the chaenomeles japonica has its spring flowers just starting the hellobours buds are peeping through the snowdrops are up no flowers yet rhubarb peeping through the soil a few primoses and lots of blue tits interested in the boxes i saw a redwing today its a really sunny day here | |

| No it is not normal Richard... I've never seen the land look so brown and as we here in Russell rely on tank water, I can't water the garden much at all.... we've had February weather (dry and hot) for the last 4 months. Even Pav the Pukeko is rationed to one bowl of water per day |

| My cyclamen are flowering outside after being covered up with a few inches of snow, and my beloved banana has made it through with signs of new growth. Im so glad I left the old leaves on it now, must have insulated the plant. | |

| Yes my lilacs are budding up. Getting such itchy fingers to get seeds planted so have got some pots of geranium seeds going on my window sill. 4 up already! Spring is on its way! | |

| Our snowdrops are out now (quite sheltered) and big buds on the hellebores. The bad winter has killed off my collection of alpines which I foolishly left outside in the shelter of the house. At least a lot of bugs will have been exterminated | |

| Yesterday I noticd my white crocasus in full bloom, my daffs have been flowering since Christmass and as one variety has gone over, the others have now started to flower. I can't really call them toughies though psilo, as we only had a slight dusting of snow here. My main worry are my grape vines, but I looked over them today and they seem fine. Also did a lot of pruning this morning and managed a good sized bonfire with the cuttings . Pete | |

| Hi Pete wow you really are ahead of the game. The only daffys flowering round here are the ones i planted inside. The ones outside are only just peeking out of the soil. Is flowering so early usual in your neck of the woods. YOu dont live inside the eden project do you lol How many grape vines do you grow and what are the grapes like? sounds terrific! | |

| Hmmmph, well I spoke too soon ! Came home from night shift this morning to find my favourite banana not looking good. Nor are my cyclamen. And it wasnt even that cold last night (it got down to -1 at its worst). All the new shoots have withered. Dont know if to chop them off my banana or leave them on. And the cyclamen that were already in flower are laying across their gravel |
