Where are you all?
I'm getting so frustrated with my inability do get much done due to my hand splints-even pegging out the washing on a sunny day was painfull!
To cheer myself up and whilst the sun was still shining I walked down to the allotment for my first visit of 2010-only 3 chaps working on their plots this afternoon
Alas my plot needs a good tidy up and weeding before I start planting veg seeds-I even missed putting in broad bean seeds before Xmas ....

I think they have had all this snow Jean trapped in, so they are all making the most, by getting out while they can.

Yes they will all be up their allotments now getting it all ready to plant. Shame about your broad beans surely not too late to do some now for a later crop.

Sorry to hear your hands are still splintered hope they soon mend.

They said last night next week we are getting the cold back which will go on for another 3 weeks, also snow is some parts.

Ours is still too frozen to work and when it defrosts it will probably be too wet - can't win. It always amazes us as to how empty the allotments are on a sunday when you would think it would be a hive of activity - particularly amongst those who are still at work.

We went to check on our allotment this morning, too wet to work on it, weeds are still growing but on the up side we still have leeks & parsnips to dig up & got some out of the ground on Friday. The garlic we planted before christmas doesn't look any worse for being covered in snow for nearly a month either. Noticed that the blackcurrant bushes have large fat buds on them too

Oh Jean, I hope your hand is soon "back in action" so to speak, but I'm glad your weather is improving. There seems to be so many diasters throughout the world! It's still pretty hot here, 35 in the kitchen so you can imagine it's too hot & humid to put any veges in. I thought I'd throw a few cucumber & okra seeds around & plant some sweet potatoes (kumaras) as they don't mind this time of the year; Our Wet Season should be arriving soon & the cyclones have started over in the West & up in the Gulf of Carpentaria. So long as they keep out of the Coral Sea! I wish I could grow Broad Beans as I love them but it's far too hot even in winter up here in the north of Aust. Can you grow Soy beans? I love them green but don't seem to be able to buy them frozen anymore. Used to buy them in Coles. You look after that hand & you'll be out & doing your garden in no time. love Judy chook

Thanks for responses and good wishes and enquiries re my hands-have decided to make a GP appointment this week as am worried re slow progress re pain
Not sure which is worse the constant pain or the frustration at not being able to do much around house and nothing in garden or allotment!
Of course seeing the awful conditions in Haiti where people are really suffering makes me feel less sorry for myself.

I have found these 'heat patches' to be very useful for combating pain Jean. You can get them at most chemists (at varying prices) and they give off comforting heat, without a smell, for 8 hours. You may be able to get a NHS prescription for them:-

http://www.expresschemist.co.uk/index.jsp?subframe=templatepage&pageid=2174

These 'wraps' are also good for backs and necks:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ThermaCare-Therapeutic-Heat-Wraps-Relief/dp/B000LNEBOC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=drugstore&qid=1263810850&sr=8-3

And these are good for knees:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ThermaCare-Therapeutic-Heat-Wraps-Relief/dp/B0021L95JI/ref=pd_sim_d_1

Although they are all rather expensive for everyday use I have found them to give relief when I have been out and about for the day, or in greater pain than usual. I sometimes use a patch at night when my arthritic ankle is 'playing me up', my daughter uses the neck patches, another friend uses the knee patches and my granddaughter uses the ones for period pains!
